Sly – Introvert

Standard

The first two tracks of this EP are smooth instrumental hip-hop with a little jazz influence. Soft beats interspersed with piano and occasional soulful female vocals. It feels like sitting in a smokey, 50s jazz bar that’s been transported to the future. The second two tracks are darker, presenting a tighter beat driven sound and sombre audio samples. These tracks manage to sound deep and unsettling, but work surprisingly well next to the earlier ones. The finisher (+Locks) is almost hypnotic. If you only check out one track today though, listen to Introspection – it’s glorious.

New Dark Age – BEAT2

Standard

A few months back I posted New Dark Age’s album 2002, an epic beat driven sci-fi concept album. Last month he released BEAT2, the follow up to his earlier release BEAT1. On these seven tracks you can hear some of New Dark Age’s signature brooding beats alongside a more bombastic, funky sound. Awesome use of vocal and music samples (Toto’s Africa is always a worthy addition).  Just give the incredibly catchy opening track a listen and try not to keep on through the whole thing. Highly recommended.

Simon Bird – V

Standard

‘V’ is the fifth release from Dublin based artist Simon Bird. Blending ambient, drone and instrumental hip-hop alongside general electronica, unsurprisingly the tracks in ‘V’ vary a lot. However, this sort of genre mixing is never an issue as long as it works. Luckily for Simon Bird it does, meaning that this release is incredibly intriguing and often wonderfully textural. Really worth listening to through headphones – there’s a lot of interesting stuff happening that you could easily miss.

Baklu – Demo B

Standard

Incredibly smooth and laid back instrumental hip-hop from Poland. Great range of tracks that move between hazy and mellow to slightly more beat driven stuff. Awesome mix of audio and vocal samples, along with a few quirky surprises. The track dobre myśli is particularly good, as is the 9 minute ambient finale simply titled ‘B’. All in all very listenable, regardless of how you feel about hip-hop. Highly recommended.

Ascensionist – Beautiful Catastrophe

Standard

Ascensionist are a group of 11 producers, MCs and instrumentalists. Beautiful Catastrophe is their debut album that mixes hip-hop with rock and pop under the concept of the end of world. Ascensionist manage to pull this off really well, with a great selection of accessible tracks. Really different and interesting stuff – the sort of album that has a little something for everyone.

Echo Waves – Echo Waves EP

Standard

Seriously feel good hip-hop release with some excellent neo-soul influenced moments. Great use of sampled and soulful vocals over hip-hop beats and neo-soul style upbeat instrumentation. A really well put together EP that is very different to any of the other hip-hop I have posted here. If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, give this a listen.

Courtship – Eve EP

Standard

A slightly older release than I would usually post, but since it was kindly requested in an email I saw no reason not to. Eve EP is a selection of subdued tracks with sombre vocals set over hip-hop beats. Really melancholic and dark at times. Pretty different and unlike anything I’ve heard before. There is also a fantastic set of remixes from this EP on the bandcamp page, which are a bit more upbeat.
