RAGS – RAGS

Standard

RAGS is not an easy release to pin down. Free flowing and fuzzy guitar driven rock interspersed with an evolving ambient background, that plays out across two tracks that make up a 30 minute play time. A bit of a slow builder, but once it gets going it is textural and hypnotizing. Very different to anything I have heard in a while, and very easy to get lost in. Highly recommended.

New Dark Age – BEAT2

Standard

A few months back I posted New Dark Age’s album 2002, an epic beat driven sci-fi concept album. Last month he released BEAT2, the follow up to his earlier release BEAT1. On these seven tracks you can hear some of New Dark Age’s signature brooding beats alongside a more bombastic, funky sound. Awesome use of vocal and music samples (Toto’s Africa is always a worthy addition).  Just give the incredibly catchy opening track a listen and try not to keep on through the whole thing. Highly recommended.

Simon Bird – V

Standard

‘V’ is the fifth release from Dublin based artist Simon Bird. Blending ambient, drone and instrumental hip-hop alongside general electronica, unsurprisingly the tracks in ‘V’ vary a lot. However, this sort of genre mixing is never an issue as long as it works. Luckily for Simon Bird it does, meaning that this release is incredibly intriguing and often wonderfully textural. Really worth listening to through headphones – there’s a lot of interesting stuff happening that you could easily miss.

Baklu – Demo B

Standard

Incredibly smooth and laid back instrumental hip-hop from Poland. Great range of tracks that move between hazy and mellow to slightly more beat driven stuff. Awesome mix of audio and vocal samples, along with a few quirky surprises. The track dobre myśli is particularly good, as is the 9 minute ambient finale simply titled ‘B’. All in all very listenable, regardless of how you feel about hip-hop. Highly recommended.

Tall Blonde – Porch Recordings

Standard

Five upbeat, mostly instrumental tracks, with a nice variety of instrumentation. Tagged as ‘ for when you’re sad and happy’, which I guess is as good an explanation for this release as any. Tracks put forward a range of sounds, from shining electronica to acoustic, campfire-esque melodies to hazy, electric guitar.

Osiris Glade – For Gliese

Standard

Adding to the recent rise in instrumental hip-hop albums I’ve been posting (not purposeful, they just seem to have ended up close together on my post list!) is For Gliese, by Osiris Glade. A good mix of chilled out and darker tracks, with a wide range of fantastic sounds and effects. The beats are pretty nice for an independent release, and there is some really catchy stuff on this album.
